Why New Furniture Is Heavier And Weaker

Engineered board is dense but holds a screw badly, so modern flat-pack furniture weighs more than solid timber while depending on fittings designed to be assembled once.

A modern chest of drawers is a struggle to carry upstairs and wobbles once it is there. The weight and the weakness come from the same material decision.

Engineered board is heavy and weak in one direction

Particleboard is wood chips bonded with resin and pressed. The resin is dense, so a board can weigh more than solid timber of the same thickness.

Strength is a different matter. The board resists bending across its face reasonably well and has almost no strength along a cut edge, where the bond is all that holds it together.

Furniture design therefore has to keep loads on the faces of panels and away from the edges, and any design that fails to do so fails quickly.

Fasteners have very little to grip

A screw driven into a board edge is biting into loose chips and glue rather than into continuous fibre, and its pull-out strength is a fraction of what timber gives.

Tightening slightly too far crushes the material around the thread, after which the screw spins freely and the joint has no remaining capacity.

This is why assembly instructions insist on hand tools, and why a joint that felt firm during assembly can be loose after the first time the item is moved.

Cam fittings are made to be assembled once

The standard cam and dowel fitting works by pulling a peg into a rotating barrel, which is quick, tool-light and adequate when everything is square.

It relies on the hole and the dowel remaining a tight fit. Dismantling and reassembling enlarges both, and the second assembly is measurably weaker than the first.

Moving house is therefore where a lot of flat-pack furniture ends its life, not because it broke but because it was only ever engineered for one build.

The thin back panel is structural

The sheet of hardboard pinned to the back is not a cosmetic cover. It triangulates the carcass and stops it leaning sideways, which is the main way such furniture fails.

Leaving out some of the pins, or fitting the panel slightly out of square, removes most of that resistance while looking entirely finished from the front.

A wardrobe that racks and a wardrobe that stands straight often differ by nothing more than whether the back was fixed properly.

Flat-pack shipping decided the design

Shipping and warehousing are priced by volume, and a flat carton occupies a fraction of the space of an assembled cabinet, which changes the economics of the whole chain.

That advantage is large enough to shape the product itself, favouring rectangular panels, standardised fittings and construction a customer can complete with an included key.

Solid timber joinery is stronger and repairable and does not fit that model, which is why it survives mainly at prices most furniture is not sold at.
