The Video Call That Freezes Only At Your End

Home connections are built lopsided, with far less capacity going out than coming in, and a video call needs the scarce direction, which you cannot see failing.

Home connections are deliberately lopsided

Consumer broadband is sold on download speed, and most technologies deliver far more capacity coming in than going out, sometimes by a factor of ten or more.

That matches typical use, where people consume far more than they send, and the asymmetry lets providers allocate scarce capacity where it is most visible.

The headline figure on the bill therefore says almost nothing about how well the line will carry a video call.

Calls need the scarce direction

A video call is unusual in sending a continuous high-quality stream outward for its entire duration, which very little other domestic traffic does.

Add a cloud backup, a game update or another household member on their own call, and the upload path saturates while the download path remains comfortable.

Congestion in that direction affects only what you send, which is precisely why the problem appears to everyone except you.

You cannot see your own stream degrade

The small preview of yourself is generated locally, before encoding and transmission, so it stays perfectly smooth no matter what happens on the network.

Nothing in the interface shows the quality actually arriving at the other end, and the software's own quality indicator reflects its estimate rather than their experience.

The only reliable diagnostic is somebody telling you, which is why the situation persists for several minutes before anyone mentions it.

Wireless is weaker going out

A router has better aerials, more transmit power and no battery constraints. A phone or laptop has none of those advantages when it is the one transmitting.

The practical result is that a device can receive a usable signal in a spot where its own transmissions barely make it back, which looks like a working connection until you send something.

Moving closer to the router or using a cable fixes calls far more often than any change to the call software does.

Buffers hide the problem until they cannot

Receivers hold a small buffer of incoming audio and video to smooth out variation in arrival times, playing out steadily while packets arrive unevenly.

When the delay exceeds what the buffer covers, playback freezes on the last complete frame while the software waits, then jumps forward once data resumes.

Audio is prioritised over video because a frozen picture with intelligible speech is far more usable than the reverse, which is why the voice usually survives the freeze.
