The Smart Doorbell That Sees You Ten Seconds Late

A battery doorbell sleeps until motion wakes it, and waking, reconnecting, uploading to a server and delivering a notification are steps that happen in sequence, not instantly.

The notification arrives as the delivery driver reaches the gate on the way out. Nothing has malfunctioned. You are watching the end of a chain of unavoidable delays.

The camera is asleep until something moves

A battery-powered doorbell cannot record continuously, because doing so would flatten the cell in a day or two. It sits in a very low power state instead.

A passive infrared sensor watches for a change in heat across its field of view, drawing almost nothing, and wakes the rest of the device when it triggers.

That sensor is deliberately insensitive to slow changes, so a person approaching directly toward it can take longer to register than one crossing sideways.

Waking is a sequence, not an instant

The processor starts, the camera module initialises and adjusts exposure, and the wireless radio powers up and rejoins the network with an authentication exchange.

Each of those takes a fraction of a second at best, and they happen one after another. Together they consume a meaningful part of the delay you notice.

Mains-powered devices skip much of this by staying awake, which is why wired installations feel dramatically more responsive than identical battery ones.

The picture goes to a server first

Video is uploaded to the manufacturer's service, where it is stored, sometimes analysed to decide whether the motion was a person, and only then made available.

The round trip leaves your house, crosses the internet, is processed and comes back, which adds delay proportional to your upload speed and the service's current load.

Analysis is the expensive step. Distinguishing a person from a passing cat is what makes notifications useful and is also what makes them late.

Notifications arrive on somebody else's schedule

Push messages are delivered through the phone platform's notification service, which batches and delays messages to protect battery life on the receiving device.

A phone in a deep sleep state may not process the message until its next scheduled wake, and the application then has to start before it can show anything.

None of this is under the doorbell manufacturer's control, which is why two devices from different makers behave similarly despite entirely different hardware.

Front doors are bad for wireless

A doorbell sits at the outer wall of a building, usually the furthest point from a router, frequently behind masonry and often near a metal frame.

Weak signal means slower upload and more retransmission, and a device that has to retry its connection adds seconds before the first frame leaves the house.

Manufacturers compensate with a short buffer of footage captured before the trigger, which recovers the missing seconds in the recording while doing nothing for the alert.
