App install interstitials interrupt a working web page to promote a slower way of reaching the same content.

The app is worth more than the web page

An installed application can send notifications, run background processes and maintain a stable identifier across sessions, none of which a browser visit provides. It also removes the browser's privacy controls from the equation, since content blockers and tracking protections do not apply inside an app.

Retention is higher for app users, which is genuinely true and is partly a selection effect, since people who install already liked the service. The measured value of an app install is therefore high enough to justify interrupting a reader who has already arrived and started reading. That calculation is the entire explanation for a banner that covers the article you clicked from a search result.

The pattern got worse before it got better

Full-screen interstitials that hid the content entirely became common enough that search engines began penalising them in mobile ranking. That penalty changed behaviour quickly, which is a useful reminder that this category of problem responds to incentives rather than to complaints.

The bit they bury in the confirmation email: the replacement is usually a persistent bottom banner, a smaller header prompt or a delayed overlay that appears after some scrolling. Delayed overlays are specifically designed to arrive after the ranking-relevant first impression, which is compliance with the measured thing. Native smart banners provided by the operating system are the least intrusive option and are used far less than the custom ones.

Continue in app, and the maze behind it

Some sites route a link opened from a message or a search into an app-only view, or refuse to display content without an install. Links that open a store page instead of the content are the most frustrating version, since the destination is lost entirely.

A related pattern opens links inside an in-app browser, which lacks your extensions, your logins and your saved passwords. Most apps offer a setting to open links in the default browser instead, and it is usually buried in a privacy or advanced menu. Changing it once removes a large amount of daily friction that most people have stopped noticing.

Why the mobile site is sometimes deliberately worse

Where the app is the commercial priority, investment in the mobile web experience is difficult to justify internally. The result is a slower, more limited site that makes the app prompt look reasonable, without anybody deciding to degrade anything. Some sites do go further and restrict features to the app, which is a straightforward product decision rather than an emergent effect.

When the app is genuinely better

For services you use daily, an app with offline support, background sync and proper notifications is usually the better tool. For a single article arrived at from a search result, installing an application is obviously disproportionate and everybody involved knows it.

The prompt cannot distinguish between those two visitors, and it is shown to both because showing it to everyone converts more. A site that asks once, remembers the answer and does not ask again is doing the same thing respectfully. That behaviour is rare enough to be noticeable, which is a fairly damning observation about the norm.

Plenty of this is legal, which is rather the point — the complaint is that it is allowed, not that it is criminal.

Reading the web on a phone anyway

Use reader mode, which strips the overlay along with everything else and generally loads faster than the page it replaces. Change the link-opening setting in your messaging and social apps so links reach your actual browser. Dismiss the banner rather than scrolling past it, since a dismissed banner is usually remembered and a scrolled one is not.

Once the introductory rate lapses, request the desktop site when a mobile page hides content behind a prompt, which occasionally reveals the whole article. And install the apps you actually use daily, which makes the rest of the prompts easy to refuse without feeling awkward about it.
